Patna: The erstwhile transit campus of IIT Patna, inaugurated in August 2008 near Polytechnic Mor with two hostels and two new buildings, today wears a desolate look. The IITP functioned from its transit campus for seven long years.
The impressive building which used to house the IITP office, library, seminar halls, classrooms and laboratories is now filled with dust.
The once lively and beautiful garden is now full of tall grass and shrubs, with none to care. Rubbish has piled up at various points on the sprawling campus, paints and plasters can be seen coming off the walls, and the furniture is broken. Window panes are shattered and the corridors are dusty.
Interestingly, after IITP shifted to its own campus in Bihta in 2015, the buildings have been handed over to Bakhtiyarpur Engineering College, which is set to start its academic session this month, for its temporary campus. The college has been set up after the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) OK'd opening of six new engineering colleges and 10 new polytechnic institutes in the state in 2016.
But only a handful of rooms are now occupied by the Bakhtiarpur Engineering College. The two boys' hostels, which were once hub of activity, are now in a bad shape.
With most of their window panes broken and iron grills rusting, the buildings have been handed over to the Bakhtiyarpur Engineering College to accommodate new students.
The newly-appointed college principal present on the campus said, "The premises was handed over to us barely six months ago. The infrastructure is definitely in bad shape and needs thorough maintenance to run the institution. We have sent a proposal to the department of science and technology for its upkeep. We hope the scenario will change in the next three-four months, once everything is streamlined."
"This is our temporary campus and the state government has already allotted land near Bakhtiyarpur. Once the construction of our own buildings is complete there, we will also shift to our permanent campus," he added.
"The two hostel buildings are also undergoing maintenance and we hope to make them habitable in the next one or two months," added another staff present on the campus.
It may be mentioned here that along with Bakhtiyarpur Engineering College, five engineering colleges at Madhepura, Sitamarhi, Sasaram, Katihar and Begusarai will also start functioning this year, taking the number of engineering colleges in the state to 13.
